When to Stain Your Fence or Deck in SW Oklahoma

By Donny's Pro Painting LLC· July 28, 2026· 5 min read

A wood fence or deck adds a lot to a home. It gives you privacy, a place to relax, and curb appeal. But bare wood does not last long in Southwest Oklahoma. Our sun, wind, and dry heat pull moisture out of the boards, and they start to gray, crack, and warp.

Stain is the fix. It soaks into the wood and blocks the sun and water that cause damage. Here is how to tell when your wood needs stain and how to get the most out of it.

Signs your wood needs stain

Walk your fence line or deck and look for these signs:

  • Gray or silver color. This is sun damage on the top layer of wood fibers.
  • Cracks and splinters. Dry wood splits, especially on board ends.
  • Cupping or warping. Boards that curl at the edges have dried out unevenly.
  • Water soaks in. Sprinkle some water on the wood. If it beads up, the old stain is still working. If it soaks right in, it is time.
  • Patchy old stain. Faded or peeling spots mean the protection is gone.

How often should you stain?

In our climate, most fences and decks need fresh stain every 2 to 4 years. Decks wear out faster than fences because people walk on them and the boards face straight up at the sun. Fences usually last a bit longer, though the side that faces south or west will fade first.

The best time of year

Spring and fall are the best times to stain here. The wood needs to be dry, and the stain works best when temperatures are mild. Very hot, sunny days can make stain dry too fast, before it soaks into the wood.

Plan for a few dry days in a row. After washing, the wood needs time to dry out before stain goes on. Rain right after staining can also wash off stain that has not soaked in yet.

Picking the right stain

There are three main types:

  • Clear or toner. Shows the most wood grain but gives the least sun protection. It will need to be redone more often.
  • Semi transparent. Adds color while letting the grain show through. This is the most popular choice and a good balance of looks and protection.
  • Solid. Looks more like paint and hides the grain. It gives the most sun protection and can cover older, worn wood. On decks, solid stain can show wear in high traffic spots.

For most fences and decks in our area, a semi transparent, oil based or hybrid stain is a great choice.

Why prep matters

Stain needs clean, open wood to soak into. If you put stain over dirt, mildew, or gray fibers, it will not last. A good staining job starts with:

  1. Washing the wood to remove dirt, mildew, and old gray fibers
  2. Letting the wood dry fully
  3. Sanding any rough or splintered spots
  4. Covering plants, siding, and concrete nearby
  5. Applying stain to every board, rail, and post, including the edges and ends

Board ends soak up water the fastest, so they need extra attention.

DIY or hire a pro?

A small deck can be a good weekend project if you have the time and tools. Long fences and large decks are a different story. Washing and staining both sides of a 200 foot fence is a lot of work, and uneven coverage shows.

A professional crew can usually finish a fence or deck in 1 to 3 days. That includes washing, drying time, and staining.

Protect your wood before it is too late

Once boards crack and warp, stain cannot undo the damage. The best time to stain is before the wood gets too far gone.
